In yoganese it means “I am that”.
I am the universe.
The universe is me.
Everything in the universe is connected, related, the same.
It is one of the phrases our instructor, Theresa at Focus Yoga, in Brookfield, Il. has us silently chant. Breathe in “sooo” breathe out “hummm”. It helps you get a clear and empty mind while you meditate.
For me it goes more like this: “soooo, hummmm” ( breath in breath out) ” sooooo, hummmm” ( breathe in breathe out) “sooooo, (h) ummmm, what should I make for dinner? I have that eggplant in the fridge I should cook th…” shoot. SOOO, HUMMMM”, BREATH IN BREATH OUT. ” Soooo, (h)uummmm”( breath in breath out…) “Hey I should stop at that estate sale that I saw on the way over. Maybe they will have a cool… dammmmitttt”. “SOOoooo HUUuuummmm” (breath in breath out)… Over and over, till finally we move on to our pretzle-esque poses. Those drive all the thoughts away except for “don’t fall, don’t fall, crap I’m gonna fall, try to fall quietly…”
This fight with my wandering brain goes on the entire time I am supposed to be laying there with a perfectly empty mind. Random thoughts in my brain see the small spot of emptiness I create and jump right in. I think they are always there, waiting in the wings for their chance. Always being overlooked because of the actual important thoughts that are always there as well. They only have one shot to be heard and they know it. They can’t compete with the thoughts that actually need to be heard so they wait… Until I am laying quietly in a darkened yoga studio. Just waiting till that I create that little bit of room in my brain and then BAM. No matter how much I try as soon as I let my guard down, in between ”soooo” and “huummm” there they are.
But I will keep trying.
I will not go down without a fight, stupid random thoughts.
Now, back to what I am making for dinner.
